Debuting on June 11, 1983 on Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW), Hawk & Animal’s first appearance together saw them enter the ring calmly and smugly as bikers, wearing black leather chaps, black wrestling tights, leather gloves, vests, and black Harley-Davidson hats.

They also wore the NWA National Tag Team Championship belts, a surprise given to them by booker Ole Anderson shortly before their debut. The previous champions, Arn Anderson and Matt Borne, were quietly stripped of the titles after Borne was arrested and accused of statutory rape, leading to his firing from GCW. The instant credibility of the titles helped to boost the already-impressive duo in the eyes of fans.

POST-APOCALYPTIC RAIDERS

To up their intimidation factor and freshen up their look, Hawk & Animal by shaving their heads into variations of mohawks. Animal said the idea was Hawk’s:
“Why doesn’t Joe shave his head into a Mohawk with one big strip of hair on the top of his head from front to back and I’ll do the opposite? I’ll have one small strip on the top left side and one on the top right. That way it’ll look like we could plug our heads into each other and it’d be a perfect fit.”

ADDING RED

his look resonated with younger fans, and was led to the duo gracing not only magazines and VHS tape boxes, but a wide range of merchandise never before depicting wrestlers, from bed sheets to school notebooks.

ADDING BLUE

When Animal & Hawk reunited as The Road Warriors in WCW on January 29, 1996 taking on The Faces of Fear, they debuted new-look shoulder pads, this time sporting black spikes on blue pads.

LOD 2000 FOR THE ATTITUDE ERA

The biggest shakeup to the look of The Road Warriors occurred upon their return to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) after their breakup angle. In the tag team battle royal at WrestleMania IV on March 29, 1998, L.O.D. 2000 surprised fans with both a new manager, Sunny, and a new look, featuring custom-painted motorcycle helmets, shoulder pads, shinguards, and forearm cuffs, and Animal donned shorts rather than tights.
